Spinal Cord Stimulation
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) was approved by the FDA in 1989 as a successful treatment option for pain management. It is also referred to as neurostimulation therapy and electrical nerve stimulation for chronic pain. At National Pain Institute, we treat patients using this form of therapy.
Who Can Receive Spinal Cord Stimulation?
This pain management treatment option is successfully used for people who suffer from:
- severe, chronic pain
- failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)
- severe nerve-related numbness and/or pain
- syndromes related to chronic pain (i.e. complex regional pain syndrome)
- chronic lower back pain
- neck pain
- arm pain
- leg pain (i.e. sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy)
- diabetic neuropathy
- peripheral neuropathy
Spinal cord therapy is successful for people who suffer from the aforementioned conditions who have not found pain relief by other means. It will help to reduce pain and provide relief. Some patients who currently take painkillers feel they are no longer needed after spinal cord stimulation.
How Does Spinal Cord Therapy Work for Pain Relief?
A trial that typically lasts one week will be conducted to ensure a patient will find adequate pain relief with this technique. To do so, a spinal cord stimulator will be used. If the patient experiences significant pain relief, the complete system using a generator will be implanted.
Soft, thin wires with electrical leads on the tips will be placed through a needle near the spinal column. 2 small incisions will be made. An electrical current will be applied to the source of chronic pain. This current blocks the brain’s ability to sense pain that was previously felt, thus producing a pleasant feeling.
As the pain improves and changes, the level of current can be changed. Pain relief experienced from spinal cord stimulation varies from patient to patient.
